Bikes, Equipment and Clothing at the Tour of California

The best bikes and clothing at the Amgen Tour of California

This is a repeat of my blog post on Team bike and team jerseys at the Amgen tour of California. Somehow I posted two versions, so in this version I have elaborated on clothing and equipment sponsors for each team.

"You look so pro!"

The look is called pro, but being pro requires a legion of support staff and dedicated sponsors and partners. I know the riders work hard but they get to race on the best bike equipment in the industry. Sponsors give huge amounts of equipment or support to the teams in hopes that the spectators will see the high level of performance and want it for themselves.

Buy Apparel

You can buy Amgen Tour of California apparel and classification jerseys at the ATOC Shop. Champion Systems is the jersey sponsor for the classification jerseys at the Tour of California.

Classification jerseys for the 2016 Amgen Tour of California
Classification jerseys for the 2016 Amgen Tour of California
You can buy some of the ProTour team jerseys at www.probikekit.com or at boutique.letour.fr or find some of the old kits at www.cyclingbox.com.

Need a bike?

Of particular interest to the amateur cyclist's price point (depending on the build) would be the bikes of Team Katusha, Team Giant-Alpecin, Novo-Nordisk, Holowesko-Citadel, Direct Energie, Trek-Segafredo and Rally.

If you have no budget (or just want to drool over extravagant bikes) check out the bikes of Team SKY, Tinkoff, BMC, Etixx-Quickstep, United Healthcare, Axeon Hagens Berman, Dimension Data or the magnificent Team Wiggins team bike.

Win a BMC bike

You have a chance to win a BMC bike custom painted by Taylor Phinney, enter bike contest on VeloNews.
Guess whose bike this is? You will see it at the Tour of California in May (but you can't have it).

Eighteen men's teams will compete in the 2016 Amgen Tour of California. These are the team jerseys and bikes, listed by: team website, country, jerseys, bikes and some of the equipment used on the bikes. Each team has a large group of equipment, goods and service suppliers (including cars!) which can be found on their team websites.

Read more about the WorldTour sponsors: Pro Team Sponsors – What Do They Do? By Inner Ring (descriptions of the products sponsors make).

One of my favorite sponsor combos: A Mini Cooper with Giant Bikes.

Let's take a look at what you will see as fans out on the road during the upcoming eight stages of the Amgen Tour of California. If you attend a start of any stage, be sure to walk by the team buses and check out the bikes lined up securely outside.

How to put on a helmet by Peter Sagan

He lights up the peloton with speed and style

He is Peter Sagan, the legend. You think he can race a bike, wait until you see the style in which he puts on a bike helmet.

Today we learn from Peter on how to put on a bike helmet.
All photos by Karen Rakestraw of Pedal Dancer®

1. First make sure all your hair will fit under the helmet. That's a lot of hair!

 2. Begin to work on that unruly mane of hair. View helmet to make sure it will all fit.

 3. Spend time to make sure your hair is just right before placing the helmet on your head.

4. Verify with others that hair is looking great.

5. Blush at compliment.

6.  Place helmet carefully upon cherished head.

7. Adjust helmet to fit modest ego atop incredible talent. Wear forward for optimal aerodynamics.

8. With glasses still in mouth, place helmet straps around ears that hear only praise and cheers.

9. Take care to place straps over perfectly trimmed facial hair.

10. Securely clip helmet, as Peter has done over 5,000 times.

11. And pow, that is how it is done folks. Thanks for coming to this demonstration.

12. Oops, quality check for that loose curl.

13. Don't leave yet folks, it gets better, he has not put on his glasses yet.

14. Glasses - the pièce de résistance!

15. Next, make sure helmet and glasses will not fall off your head by checking if tires are round.

16. You are ready to roll to the start line past iphone photogs and swooning podium girls.

17. Always get a last minute equipment check from a respected pro. Mark Cavendish is usually handy.

18. Time to look cool at the start line. Best to intimidate others by having a helmet that perfectly matches the team kit (National Champion team kit is recommended). Tip: neon colors are preferred.

19. Immediately after a stage, while international cameras are 4-feet away, it is recommended to keep helmet and glasses on.

20. Unless you collapse in utter exhaustion, at which point try to remove glasses and helmet before passing out.

21. Helmet is not needed during times writhing with pain and agony after the stage.

22. Or when dry heaving after a really tough climb.

23. Helmets are super cool for time trials. Although you must make this face if wearing an TT helmet.

These photos were taken in May in California. You can imagine how much fun it was to be there, at the Tour of California, to see Peter race (and win yellow!). If you see his name on a roster for any race - go! You know he looks amazing on TV, in person he is AWESOME.

Catching up with tech advances in cycling

Who says a bicycle never changes

Did anyone else complete the 2014 Cyclingnews Reader Poll? Sure I know all the riders, sure I know all the races, and most certainly I have my opinions on who and what are the best. But then the tech questions appeared before my eyes. Uh-oh I don't know all these, I realized in shame.  There have been a lot of new technological equipment changes and advances in the bicycle industry over the past year(s). I need to catch up.

Advances are so numerous, the Cycling News poll devoted two pages to best new tech advance and best new product. I copied the two pages onto an email to myself, titled it "Learn" and sent it off to myself as a message to get-with-it. Today it has become my Sunday homework, and now, yours.

What is the Best New Product?
  • Speedplay SYZR pedal
  • Schwalbe ProCore tubeless tire system
  • Garmin Edge 1000
  • Shimano XTR Di2 electronic mountain bike transmission
  • GoPro Hero 4
  • Giro Synthe aero road helmet
  • Fabric ALM saddle
  • Zwift virtual group ride indoor training system
  • Campagnolo Record/Super Record road group
  • SRAM Force CX1 1x11 cyclo-cross bike transmission
  • Don't know (this is NOT an option, you will know once you read the reviews below)

Take the time to read up on each of these new products and you will know a lot about recent developments in our sport. I have selected some of the best written reviews by leading tech reporters from varying sources found across the web (actually my favorite reviewers are Logan VonBokel, James Huang and Ben Delaney but I have ventured to offer a variety). In order of new products listed on the Cyclingnews Reader Poll, please read:

The fact that I had to dig past every major online sales site to find a review of the new GoPro Hero 4 might indicate who is making a gazillion bucks on the newest product released.  If you read Logan VonBokel's review of the new Shimano XTR Di2 you will read how he thinks it is "The best group." Now that it is winter in Colorado, I think the Zwift Indoor Trainer would come in very handy.

What is the best new tech advancement?
  • Full-suspension fat bikes
  • BioShift automatic shifting
  • Focus RAT quick-release thru-axle system
  • Inexpensive power meters
  • Direct-mount road brakes
  • Canyon MRSC magnetic suspension system
  • Automatically adjusting safety lights
  • Schwalbe ProCore tubeless tire system
  • Advanced aluminium frames
  • 3D printing
  • Don't know (this is NOT an option, you will know once you read the reviews below)

Next take the time to read up on each of these tech advancements. Again I have selected some of the best written reviews by leading tech reporters from varying sources found across the web. In order of new tech updates listed on the Cyclingnews Reader Poll, please read:

What this homework exercise has taught me is that bikes do indeed change and advances are continuously made as man is forever trying to improve. It also makes me realize there is an endless amount of gear to spend my money upon and an old bike is any bike older that three years. Mostly this quick review of tech advances in the bike industry for 2014 has taught me that I should have been a gear tech reviewer. Could you imagine the pure happiness of package after package of this goodness arriving at the doorstep of your office, or being flown out to new tech press announcements? I would love my job.

Look how happy these people look to be riding a bike indoors? That might be the biggest advancement ever in cycling.

Somehow I ended up not linking to any Cycling News tech reviews, for a full list of their reviews, please read: cyclingnews.com/tech

TEAM SPONSORED EQUIPMENT

Cyclists love their bikes.  Pros love their Sponsors.

Rule #1

Riders ride the equipment the team rides. The Team rides the equipment of the team sponsors.

That sounds pretty straightforward, but there are a lot of teams, and different type of riders on each team. That is why I have compiled these simple tables for you to refer to - discover all the bike equipment used by each ProTour team:

ProTeam Equipment 2013 - Bikes, Components, Wheels and Tires By Pedal Dancer
ProTeam Equipment 2013 - Pedals, Saddles, Clothing, and Helmets By Pedal Dancer

Rule #2

Pro Riders get to test ride, race, and contribute in developing the top gear in the industry.

Within the brand, the pros have access to the top of the line stuff. They are issued their equipment for free and are sometimes paid through additional contracts to promote it as individuals (i.e. Cancellara's union with Trek).
