When you know a bike race is in town

The 22 teams of the 2014 Tour de France were announced this week. Being selected for the Tour de France is big. Not only does the Grand Tour bring the best chance of highest income for the year, inclusion in the race is a symbol of being the best of the best (unless you are a French Pro Continental team then you just get to go).

Each of the 22 teams will have 9 riders, adding up to the traditional super big peloton of 198 riders and making getting a hotel room anywhere near a stage start nearly impossible. Below I have linked up each team's name with the corresponding ProCycling Stats page (great site!), the source for more information, team jerseys, riders, analysis and statistics.

My review of the route and climbs of the 2014 Tour de France, here: Route of the 2014 Tour de France.  If the riders cover 3,656 kilometres in 23 days, think how far these team buses and team cars drive to get to the start and stop villages, to hotels, to feed stations, and pick up supplies. The teams cover big total mileage every year.
22 teams, 198 riders have to ride 21 stages and 3,656 kilometres in 2014

I always get excited driving down the road with the team buses heading in the same direction to the next start village. To me it has become a wonderful symbol of chasing a tour.

Well if you have to get stuck in traffic on the autoroute transferring between stages, you might as well be entertained in the midst of the team buses. At the Tour de France, Photo by Karen Rakestraw at Pedal Dancer®
Follow that van and it will lead you to riders training up on the cobbles. The atmosphere approaching any race day is so fun. The day before Ronde van Vlaanderen, Photo by Karen Rakestraw at Pedal Dancer®

Update: Chris Horner was confirmed as signing to Lampre-Merida. Photo for the Day - Chris Horner.  Read the news from today: Lampre confirms signing of Chris Horner for 2014 season.

How much will Horner make at Lampre-Merida? Well that remains to be seen because he and his non-official spokesman Baden Cooke designed a contract heavy with bonuses. Which means the better the 42-year old races, the more money he will make. Awesome idea I told my brother in our morning conversation today, "Probably something they should require of more riders, like Andy Schleck for starters." Sorry Andy, but performance based models make sense in a world of get your World Champion victory or Grand Tour podium and rush to sign a four-year contract, then answer one hundred thousand interview questions about the big come-back so your salary makes sense. Chris Horner has motivation.

What ever happened to Chris Horner?

Chris Horner (at the Tour de France) might be signing a new contract in the coming week(s).  Photo by Karen Rakestraw at Pedal Dancer®

How to win a Grand Tour and face forced retirement because you are asking too much money and people worry about your age. That has been the story of the months following Chris Horner's big victory at the 2013 Vuelta a España and his expectations of earning his initially desired for 750,000€ a year.

What a horrible way to possibly end a career. But do not fear, some team might want Chris ...

News: Lampre riders watching with interest for possible Horner arrival, By VeloNews. And Chris Horner is balancing love and money, also by VeloNews. His potential new team Lampre-Merida is currently racing in Australia in this week's Tour Down Under; they won Stage 2 yesterday.

By this late stage in the game, I hope to see Chris Horner racing somewhere, even if it is for far less (might be -2/3 the salary) than his personal desire or worth.

“But maybe instead of signing for money, you’re signing for love,” ~ Chris Horner

Chris Horner might end up finally feeling the love in this jersey

Riders at the 2013 Tour of California

Who will be racing at the 2013 ATOC or GIRO

Who is joining us at the Tour of California?

It was officially announced that Philippe Gilbert, Tejay van Garderen, Peter Sagan, Andy Schleck, Tyler Farrar, and Sylvain Chavanel will compete in the Tour of California's eight stages beginning May 12, 2013. Tom Boonen will not be coming to California, bummer. Neither will Chris Horner who is out with knee pain.

See the 16 teams for the 2013 Tour of California: Teams for 2013 Tour of California Announced.
Also visit the official Team page on the Amgen Tour of California website.

See the preliminary (not official) start list of riders for the 2013 Tour of California, By Pro Cycling Stats. Or another (confirmed) list by VeloNews.com Confirmed rosters for the 2013 Amgen Tour of California.

Beginning tomorrow morning in Italy, the Giro d'Italia launches. The roster is official for the Giro, and any rider competing in the Giro will obviously not be in California enjoying the sunny weather, nice hotels, friendly fans, and shorter 1-week tour with stiff competition. See the list (and some of my photos*) of the Riders at the 2013 Giro d'Italia

Riders to watch for at the Tour of California

I would like to share some photos I took in 2012 that will help you recognize these riders at the race. As a fan it is one thing to recognize a rider in their team kit, racing down the road with the announcer telling us who is in the breakaway or returning to the team car, it is another thing to recognize a rider quickly outside a team bus with their glasses and helmet off, or walking around a host city in plain street clothes.

Recognizing your favorite rider is a big part of the fun of being a fan the races..... learn these faces.  All photos ©By Karen at Pedal Dancer®  click any image to enlarge
