Faces at the Race - Tour de France

Sharing some of my photography

I really enjoy taking photographs at the races because there is so much that catches the eye - the teams, the bikes, speed and the podium. But the photos I enjoy the most (other than the leg shots of course) are the closeup headshots of the riders. It took me years to learn the riders as they switch teams frequently and change jerseys and haircuts. Now I can recognize a rider in plain clothes or from a distance on his bike just by seeing his body position or a distinguishing characteristic (like Chavanel's "coral" bike!)

This year's Tour de France has been exciting because many of the favorites that the journalists touted turned out to be not so favorite once the race got going. Except for Froome of course, but he is where he is from hard work and preparation. What I have truly enjoyed are the smaller named riders, the riders who in their own right are a big deal, but get little attention heading into the Tour. It was great to see Jans Bakelants victorious and cloaked in yellow, to watch Marcel Kittel dominate the sprints, and to see Dan Martin take that mountain stage win with such ease.

Sure many of us probably had Marcel Kittel on our fantasy teams - but 3 stage wins - wow!

Today I thought I would share some photos I took last year while in France. I like capturing photos at the race that help me learn a rider and allow me to peer into their world, before or after competition.

An odd look from Stuey, (it cracks me up when the riders do this, I have a number of shots like this that always seem to be out of focus because it startles me a bit when they look at me or smile).
And this photo just because I miss Bernie at the Tour de France so much!!

Bernhard Eisel
And I miss Johan Vansummeren
And I miss Chris Horner too
I am a fan of James Startt, who has the same tshirt this year, so he gets included here too.
And I am a sucker for the kid shot ...
Thomas Voeckler and his son, playfully riding before a stage start in Macon.
What, this doesn't count as a headshot? I nearly got run over by a duck trying to get this shot!
It was fun being at Le Tour.
