Photo of the Day: Snow in France

There was a heat wave in California; it is still snowing in France

Weren't we just sweltering in the brutal heat of southern California?  Today at the Giro d'Italia in France, it was snowing on the fans and riders. If you are wondering how the summit of the Col duGalibier could be non-reachable for a bike ride in mid-May, this photo of the road near the summit of the Col du Tourmalet, (from today), explains a lot.

See the photo and article by Paddy Sweeney at Velo Peloton in the French Pyrenees, and his expected date of when the route over the Col du Tourmalet should be open this year:

Please read: Is Col du Tourmalet Open 2013.

Paddy is a man from Ireland, who now operates a (recommended) cycling lodge in the Pyrenees, together with his wife Olive. They live in Saint-Savin, a fantastic location in the Lavedan Valley, at the foot of many of the bucket list climbs in the French Pyrenees. You will find that Paddy and Olive are not only a good hosts, they will surely become friends. See more of Paddy's photos here: Photo galleries. His websites are jam-packed with information for cyclists: La Lanterne Rouge Cycling Lodge, VeloPeloton.

There was an amazing finish on the Col du Galibier this morning in the French Alps. Giovanni Visconti won the stage in a snow storm. Molto drammatico!
